The Eastern Painted Turtle on the Avon Peninsula

Avon River Heritage Society

o
ver a hundred years ago on the site of the museum at Newport Landing stood the Harvie and Mosher shipyards. Between them, they built and launched 160 sailing ships. These ships sailed the oceans bringing Newport Landing to the world and the world to Newport Landing. Many more ships were built in the communities along the Avon River - Windsor, Hantsport, Mt. Denson, Burlington, Summerville, Kempt and Horton.

Our museum features exhibits of this time as well as exhibits on the New England Planters, local house histories, and Avon River ecology.

If you’re hungry for more than history, relax and enjoy a scenic lunch overlooking the Avon River on our deck at the Lydia and Sally Café. Souvenirs and locally-handcrafted gifts are available from our giftshop.

If you time it right, you can also watch the Minas Basin tidal bore from the highest tides in the world, the Bay of Fundy.

Avon River Heritage Museum - living our history today.
